In 1879 Prince Albert was a small village on the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River. The closest contact with the outside world was Winnipeg, 700 miles away. A dispensation, dated May 22, 1879, was granted by the Grand Lodge of Canada to organize a Lodge in Prince Albert to be named Kinistino #381, "Kinistino" being the generic mane of a Cree tribe of Indians. The first meeting was held over Bro Porter's office on October 3, 1879. In 1882 the lodge surrendered its charter to the Grand Lodge of Canada and accepted a charter from the Grand Lodge of Manitoba as Kinistino Lodge #16.

In 1883 the Lodge moved its meeting place to quarters in the Tresson Building on River Street followed, In 1887, to a room over T.H. Campbell's store. This was followed by another move to a building owned by Shenff O.E. Hughes on Government Road, this latter building later becoming the American Hotel.

An agreement was made with a contractor in 1904 to build a hall, which the lodge would rent for $35.00 a month with an option to purchase for $7,000.00 anytime within three years. The first meeting was held In the new hall on S1. John's Day, December 27,1905.

The last meeting of Kinistino Lodge under its old designation as Lodge #16 was held on July 6, 1906.
Then on Fnday, September 7, 1906, it met for the first time as Kinistino Lodge #1 under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan.

On Friday, June 17, 1910, MW Bro W. B. Tate, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan, laid the cornerstone of the Masonic Temple erected on 10th Street between Central Avenue and First Avenue West. December 2, 1910, marked the first meeting in the new building.
The years have brought many changes and even another Temple.

History

Instituted: 1883

Constituted: Moose Jaw No. 3, 1906

The first lodge meetings in Moose Jaw were held in leased buildings. Then in 1905 a Masonic Temple was erected at what is now known as 27 Main Street North. However, disaster struck on Sunday January 23, 1921, and the temple was gutted by fire and completely destroyed. Another temple was built. MW Bro G.M Weir, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan rededicated the new building on March 31, 1922.

In 1950 the lodges in Moose Jaw purchased the old YWCA building. The upper floors were renovated into suites and rented out but are no longer occupied because of new building codes and the cost of updating the building.

The following lodges also currently use the Masonic Temple in Moose Jaw:

  • Moose Jaw Lodge #3, instituted October 3, 1883
  • Doric-St. George Lodge #71, instituted December 7, 19100
  • Memorial Lodge #172, instituted January 11, 1923

Two years later it moved again, this time to the upper story of the schoolhouse and from there to the top floor of the town hall. In 1903 the lodge moved to the Hastings Block and in 1926 to the top floor of the Brooks Block. Finally, in 1958 a new Masonic Temple was built.

It is interesting to note that the First Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan was MW Bro H.H. Campkin, a member of Indian Head Lodge. He served as Grand Master for two terms, 1906-07 and 1907-08.

In 1905 the White Building burned down and the Masons lost all their regalia and furniture. Charter member John McGuirl made new furniture to replace what had been lost.

In 1961 the former curling rink was purchased from the town ofMoosomin and demolished. A Masonic Temple was built on this site and opened May 10, 1962. W Bro K.A. Prince laid the cornerstone. The first lodge meetings in Maple Creek were held on the third floor of the Dixon Store Building from 1893 to 1937. Then, from 1937 to 1960, the brethren of Maple Leaf Lodge rented the second floor of the Wasno Store Building. In 1960 the members decided to rent the new lOaF Hall. However, in April, 2001, the building was sold by the lOaF to a new owner who converted the building for other purposes.

Following the sale and until September, 2002, lodge meetings were held in one of the available rooms in the Maple Creek Legion Hall. During this time, with some financing provided by the members of Maple Leaf Lodge and some volunteer labour, a very suitable area on the lower floor of the Elks Hall was converted into an excellent Lodge Hall. Maple Leaf Lodge held its first meeting in the new hall on September 30, 2002.

"The Lodge is now North West Mounted Police in name only, but the name will be a landmark when the Police have gone."

In that sentence is epitomized a half century of history of this famous Lodge. It has in it a note of sadness and regret but also of prophecy and promise. It was written by P.W. Brother Isaac Forbes in his report as D.D.G.M. in 1906 -the year when the fortunes of the Lodge had reached their lowest ebb and when was made the momentous decision which saved the Lodge from oblivion and started it again on the pathway of prosperity.

History

The Charter was received on June 19, 1907.

Early in the life of all pioneer settlements, there comes a time when sober and industrious men, having completed the urgent tasks at hand, desire to further the ethical, social and moral side of their natures, and consequently band together to attain those aspirations. The result of such a process of events often resulted in the formation of a Masonic Lodge, a process that has been repeated times without number in the history of the world, and the well-used pattern was followed in this locality in the fall of 1906.

On Thursday, October 4, 1906, a preliminary meeting was held for the discussion of the formation of a Masonic Lodge in the very small, year old village of North Battleford. A number of Brethren met in the Victoria Hall, upstairs in the North Battleford Trading Company building (later, the Victory Motors Building, at 1292 Main (100th) Street). Those present were: Bro. John R. Chisholm, Bro. Dan B. Detwiller, Bro. Wm. E. Ramsay, Bro. H. H. Estridge, Bro. R. C. Pettypiece, and Bro. Harry Cameron. At this meeting it was decided to proceed with the organizational work, and the name suggested for the proposed Lodge was "Saskatchewan."

On Wednesday, December 19, 1906, acting under a dispensation (U.D.) from the newly-formed (August 9, 1906) Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan, R.W. Bro. Warwick, and six other Brethren from Battle Lodge No. 19 (Battleford, Saskatchewan), proceeded with the first Installation Ceremony. As the necessary equipment had not yet arrived, the Brethren, nothing daunted, had recourse to carpenters' aprons and tools.

The Lodge made sufficient progress to make it possible to seek a Charter. The names of the first Officers of the newly organized Lodge now known as "Warwick" were:

W. Master - W. Bro. J.R. Chisholm
Sr. Warden - Bro. D.B. Detwiller
Jr. Warden - Bro. Harry Cameron
Treasurer - Bro. John Manson
Secretary - Bro. A.W. Sutherland
Tyler - Bro. Hugh Smith

At the meeting held on Tuesday, January 29, 1907, the name of the Lodge was changed from "Warwick" (being a name of a person and contrary to the laws of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan) "Ionic", the number assigned being No. 31.
