Greetings Brethren,

Brethren, I have said it before, and I say it again: Thank you for your confidence in electing me as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan and for entrusting me to govern with wisdom and care. I shall do my best in all endeavours to prove myself worthy of your confidence and trust.

When I began this journey 26 ½ years ago, the question often arose of what exactly does “making good men better” mean. There is not a day since where I have not considered or answered this in some fashion. I believe that Freemasonry makes men better (or gives them the tools to make themselves better) primarily through the lodge structure, and then beyond that through the fraternity in general. Generally, a man petitions a lodge because he wishes to contribute to society and to become a better man, husband, father, son, and citizen. His is a lofty goal for which we strive.

Freemasonry helps in this personal growth by providing a peer group which may not have existed beforehand – a meeting place of like-minded men wherein mutual support not only happens but is encouraged. We know the power of a group of people meeting together and how that energy can spread (consider a sporting event and “home-field advantage”). By meeting with like-minded individuals who are committed to this growth, each Mason finds a favourable place in which to grow as a person. We tell our new Initiates that they will get out of Freemasonry what they put into it, and this is the most true for those who are active members who attend regularly and who contribute to the ritual and social activities of their lodge. Finding that favourable place to attend, to share, and to develop as a Mason and as a human being is a worthwhile pursuit. How much better could our communities be if every citizen was working for these positive outcomes. When we work towards these goals, we work towards finding our centre within our lives.

In the coming months, I intend to use this space to highlight and explain some elements of our ritual, our practices, and our constitution. If you have a particular question, please send it to the Grand Lodge office for consideration.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can in the coming months.

Fraternally,

MW Bro. Patrick Davis, Grand Master, 2024-25
